פרשת בראשית

Dvar Torah

Sensitive Toward Others' Feelings

(בראשת א:כו) וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹקים נַעֲשֶׂה אָדָם בְּצַלְמֵנוּ...

And Hashem said, “let us make man in our form...”

In this week’s Parasha we find the creation of the universe.  After spending almost 6 days working on the details of the world, its necessities and its beauties, Hashem got ready to make man.  The words that the Torah uses to introduce the creation of man, however, seems to be a little troubling.  The Torah says; “And Hashem said, ‘let us make man in our form…’” implying that Hashem needed to ask for permission or at least approval!  This leaves the ability for people to say that G-d forbid, Hashem is not the only!  The question is to who was Hashem speaking and why?

Rashi explains that this shows us the humbleness of our Father in heaven for Hashem was asking the Angels for permission to make man.  Hashem did not need their approval, yet Hashem asked so that they would feel like they had a part of the creation of people.

Even so is it worth the risk of leaving a place for people to probably blunder and think that there might be more that one god?

Hashem wanted to teach us the extent of how cautious one must be towards others feelings and even sometimes take a hit to make our friends feel good and be embarrassed.

With this lesson in mind, how far out of our way should we go to make others feel welcome and comfortable and for sure not to embarrass them?

Shabbat Shalom!

Torah Math

When Hashem created the universe, the Torah tells us that Hashem saw the light and it was good. What is this light?

The words the Pasuk uses are וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב. The numeric value of the words את האור is the same as the word בתורת. The light of the world that Hashem said “is good” is the light of the Torah! And each of these words is equal to 613, the same as the amount of the Mitzvot in the Torah... CHECK IT OUT!!!!!
